Anterior Leg

The anterior compartment of the leg, also known as the dorsi-flexor (extensor) compartment.

Muscles in this compartment primarily dorsi-flex the ankle joint, extend the toes and invert the foot.

Tibialis anterior
Extensor digitorum longus
Extensor hallucis longus
Fibularis tertius

 

There are 4 muscles in this compartment.

They are the tibialis anterior, extersor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus and the fibularis tertius.

Both of the extensor hallucis longus and the extensor digitorum longus, together with the tibialis anterior and the fibularis tertius, all dorsi-flex and invert the foot.

Anterior tibial artery is the artery that offers the blood supply to the anterior compartment of the leg.

From the picture above, you can see that this artery originates from the femoral artery.

The nerve supply to this compartment is the deep fibular nerve.

From the picture above, you can see that this nerve originates from the common fibular nerve.
